What is GPA?
GPA, or Grade Point Average, is a numerical summary of your academic performance. A semester GPA is normally calculated by weighting each course grade by its credit hours.
How to calculate GPA
The common weighted formula is:
GPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ Credit Hours
For example, if you receive different grades in courses worth different numbers of credits, a 4-credit course contributes more to the semester GPA than a 1-credit course.
How to use this GPA calculator
- Enter the course name.
- Enter the course's credit hours.
- Enter the grade-point value assigned by your institution.
- Add all courses for the semester.
- Select Calculate GPA.
Example GPA calculation
Suppose you have three courses:
- Course A: 3 credits × 4.0 grade points
- Course B: 3 credits × 3.0 grade points
- Course C: 2 credits × 3.5 grade points
The weighted GPA is:
(3×4.0 + 3×3.0 + 2×3.5) ÷ 8 = 3.44

Does every university use the same GPA scale?
No. Some institutions use a 4.0 scale, while others use different scales or grading rules. This calculator does not assume that a particular letter grade always has the same numerical value. Enter the grade points specified by your institution.
Frequently asked questions
Can I calculate GPA without credit hours?
You can calculate a simple average of grade points, but that may not be the official GPA method when courses have different credit values. A credit-weighted calculation is generally more appropriate when credit hours are available.
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA usually represents one academic period, while CGPA combines academic performance across multiple periods. Your institution's definitions may differ.
Can international students use this calculator?
Yes. The calculator accepts grade-point values directly, so it can be used with different institutional grading systems.
Is this an official university GPA result?
No. It is a general calculation tool. For applications, transcripts and official academic decisions, use the GPA reported by your school or university.
